If it’s not obvious, backlinko analysed 5 million search results on Google to gain some data, here are some of the findings:

  • The #1 result in Google’s organic search results has an average CTR of 31.7%
  • The #1 organic result is 10x more likely to receive a click compared to a page in #10 spot.
  •  Organic CTR (click through rate) for positions 7-10 is virtually the same. Therefore moving up a few spots on the bottom of the first page may not result in more organic traffic.
  • CTR increases by 30.8 percent on average when you move up one slot in the search results. This, however, is dependent on where you’re travelling from and where you’re going. Moving from position #3 to #2 frequently results in a considerable increase in CTR. Moving from #10 to #9, on the other hand, makes no statistically significant effect.
  • When compared to sites without a question in the title, pages with a question in the title have a 14.1 percent higher CTR.
  • The majority of people don’t look past the fifth result.
  • The top three Google search results receive 75.1 percent of all clicks
